Chris was born in Newburgh Township in 1851, the first child of James William and Maria (Sleight) Baxter to be born in the United States. His parents and 4 siblings had come here from England by Yankee Clipper in 1850. One little girl had died of Diphtheria in England.
He died as a result of a railroad accident and left his widow Marie (Kaltenbach) and 3 children, John, Christopher and Sue, all under the age of 6.
