John was the son of Mathias and Hannah (Thompson) Askins and husband of Harriett Viall. He was for many many years the Sheriff of Harts Falls (now the Village of Schaghticoke).
At the age of 90, and suffering from cancer of the mouth, he went out in the back to the barn and shot himself with a gun which he had taken from a would-be suicide many years before.
