Edith Howard Dillon Ayres passed away on December 28th, at the age of 102.

She was born on July 16, 1909 in Birmingham AL, to Barclay Hugh Dillon and Edith Mabel Dillon (both deceased). Brothers, Barclay Dillon Jr. and Robert Samples Dillon, of Birmingham, are also deceased. She had two sisters who did not survive past infancy. Edith's mother died in childbirth, and she was raised in Memphis by her father and aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. James Jackson Vaughn.
She attended Idlewild Grammar School and graduated from Central High School in 1928. Edith attended West Tennessee State Teacher's College (later called the University of Memphis) and graduated in June, 1932. Edith also served as President of her sorority, Alpha Gama Delta. Mrs. Ayres was a veteran of the U.S. Army/Women's Army Corp and served during WWII. She also worked at the Memphis Power and Light Company, Florida Power and Light Company, the Girl Scouts of America, and the YWCA in Memphis, TN.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Chambers Ayres, Jr, who practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Memphis for many years.

Edith and J.C. enjoyed traveling together and made many interesting trips overseas.

Children include daughter, Martha Paige and husband, Jim Allen, of Shreveport, LA; son, John Chambers Ayres III and wife, Johnna, of Cabot, AR; and daughter, Janie Ayres and husband, Ed Miles, of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren include Dillon and Dallas Miles of Knoxville, TN, Christy Ayres Stern of Birmingham, AL, John C. Ayres IV of Fairfax, VA, Kelly Ayres Spencer of Cabot AR, Richard Clay Allen of the Netherlands, and James Ronald Allen of Fort Collins, CO. She also has seven great-grandchildren.

Edith lived her Christian faith each day and her church life family was very important to her. She was a life-long member of Union Avenue United Methodist Church, active in Church Women United, and taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She continued to teach in the adult class until she was 96. Edith was also a founding member of the Memphis Wednesday Study Club which continues today. Edith was a wonderful mother and friend. She had a love of family and was especially close to cousins, Anna and Francis Henry (deceased) of Memphis. She stayed active and enjoyed many activities including maintaining early the friendships from her camping days at Girl Scout Kamp Kiwani and later involvement with Camp Miramichee in Hardy, AR.

Special friends include Dr. Alys Lipscomb, Jean Cone, and Joyce Hall. The family is grateful to her very ‘special' friends and caregivers: Bobbie Guy, Naomi Guy, Charlene Kirby, and Earia Brown. They made these last few years and Edith's wishes to remain in Memphis possible.

Our special thanks to Edith's friend, Pastor Dennis Neenan and the staff at The Wesley Highland Terrace for their prayers and kindness that made Edith's stay there so happy.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Girl Scouts of America. Graveside services will be today, Friday, December 30, at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery.
