After graduation from high school, he went to work at the Noblesville Ledger. In 1916 he married Alpha T. Robinson. He served overseas in World War I. Following his discharge in May 1919 he was employed by the Indianapolis Star for thirty-seven years.

The only child of Arza Franklin and Alpha T. (Robinson) Commons: Janice E. Commons who married Robert Tuttle.
