It is related in the "Colonial Families of the United States, Vol. 2" that Grafton was enthralled with tales of the California 49ers and left his home on Evits Creek as a young man and headed for California. He reached Sacramento with a wagon team of Virginia families in 1859 and carried out teaming and some farming. He returned to the east coast and married Martha M. Dunlevy in Oct. 1865. They were settled in Wheeling, the early capitol of W.V., where he practiced his trade as a carpenter.
