City's Oldest Resident Expires at Age of 97

Andrew J. Herbert, 97, who had the honor of being Otsego's oldest citizen, passed from this life Monday, August 5, (1946) after several years of failing health. He had lived at the home of his son, Lowell J. Herbert at 307 W. Orleans here for the past seven years.

He was born March 17, 1849 in Gun Plains township the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Herbert. The old homestead was located about two and a half miles east of Plainwell, and most of his early life was spent in that vicinity. While a resident (of) Plainwell proper, he joined the Masonic lodge in 1870 and received his life membership in 1914. He was the oldest Masonic lodge member in the State of Michigan, having been a Mason for 75 years.

A good many years of his later life was spent in Barry county near Hastings. His wife, the former Adema Robinson, died about thirty years ago. After her death, a year or so later he married Mrs. Eva Murry, of Hastings, and it was after her death seven years ago that he came here to make his home with his son.

His many hobbies included hunting, fishing, traveling, photography and reading. For 70 years he was a member of the Methodist church and by reading a chapter of the Bible daily, had read the New Testament 97 times. In 1943 he wrote 300 letters and cards many of them to members of the armed forces.

In addition to his son, he survived by many grandchildren, included a fifth generation grand-daughter, Kathleen Tish.

Funeral services will be held today at two o'clock in the Plainwell Methodist church, Rev. Babbitt officiating, with Boyce funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Pall bearers will be Eugene Springer, Ed Herbert, Henry Norman, Henry Oggel, Vern Piper and Roger Herbert.

Burial will be in Hillside cemetery, Plainwell.
