Son of Nathan and Hannah Gray Oliver.
A Confederate veteran, Cornelius enlisted in Capt. Wilcox's Co. G, 1st KY. Cavalry C.S.A. (later Co. K, 5th KY. Cavalry) on Sept. 1st, 1861. This was a company raised primarily from Lyon County, KY.
Captured at Bristol, TN. on Dec. 14, 1864 by Union forces.
Sent to Camp Chase, OH. POW camp.
Exchanged at Richmond, VA. on Feb. 27, 1865.
Cornelius died sometime after the 1880 census was taken, before 1900.
