James was born in Clinton and lived there all of his life until he enlisted in the Marines 27 July 1966, at the Indianapolis Recruiting Office
Upon arriving in Vietnam James was assigned to Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. While participating in Operation Union II Mike Company encountered a large NVA force in the vicinity of Vinh Huy in the Nu Loc Son Basin and8 kilometers east southeast of Que Son.
James was wounded 2 June and was med-evac to the Station Hospital NSA in Danang and died in the hospital two day later, as a result of a gunshot through the abdomen and multiple fragmentation wounds to his right leg from hostile rifle fire and mortar rounds.
Survived by his mother, Julia June C Overpeck of 204 S Market St, Rockville and his father, Harley L Overpeck of 208 N Jefferson, Rockville and brother, Darwin Overpeck of South Bend all Indinana.
