Lon Bruce Bates, 85, of Mount Pleasant died on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, in Mount Pleasant.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant with Dr. Clint Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Nevills Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Robb Bates, Jim Brooks, Cappy Payne, Dwain Fortenberry and Bill Kent. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of First Baptist Church, the staff of Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home, his Sunday school class, Titus County Fresh Water District Board, the Rotary Club and the East Texas Baptist University Administration.

Mr. Bates was born on Aug. 6, 1922, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Alanzo L. Bates and Annie (Holland) Bates. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II from 1941-1945. He was one of the co-founders of Smith-Bates Funeral Home which is now the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home. He also was a 60 year member of Masonic Lodge #70 n Mount Pleasant; member of Scottish Rite; a Shriner; and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was emeritus board member at East Texas Baptist University.

He is survived by his special niece and spouse, Wanda and Bob O'Nan of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters-in-law, Lorene Bates of DeKalb, Margaret Bates of Atlanta, and Trixie Johnson of Alexandria, La.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Louise Bates; his parents; three brothers, Don, Jack and Noble Bates; and a sister, Lucille Bates Bailey.
