Biography by Tom Brocher: William traced his lineage to several prominent early New Englanders: through his paternal line to Mayflower Pilgrim, George Soule, manservant to manservant to Edward Winslow and signer of the Mayflower Compact; through his maternal line to Susannah (North) Martin, hanged for witchcraft at Salem in 1692; and to several Revolutionary War soldiers and sailors.

William was born at Caledonia, Houston Co., Minnesota on 22 June 1884; died at Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., California on 16 Nov. 1942 at 6:15 PM at his residence, 445 East 3rd Street, of an acute dilation of chronic myocarditis; his remains were cremated but the location of his ashes are currently unknown [CA Reg., Deaths, #1703].

William was enumerated with his parents at Caledonia between 1895 and 1920 where he was a land agent in Houston Co. and North Dakota [Caledonia Journal, 2 Mar. 1910, 9 Aug. 1911, 28 Mar. 1912].

William became very active in Democratic politics and during August 1912 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Baltimore which nominated Woodrow WILSON for president [Caledonia Argus, Town Crier Col., Oct. 1983].

In October 1913, at the death of his grandfather, James Johnson BELDEN, William was a resident of Caledonia [J. J. Belden's Obituary].

By 1920 William became postmaster of Caledonia [1920 Census; His Obituary, Caledonia Journal, 16 Nov. 1942].

William removed to Long Beach, California, by 1926, where he is listed in the Phone Directory as the Manager of Sierra Vista Apartments on 1600 E. Ocean.

The Long Beach earthquake of March, 1933, may have damaged his apartment complex; it certainly damaged the building in which his parents were staying at the time [His niece, May 13, 1989].

By 1935 William removed to 35c Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, and was a clerk [Long Beach Phone Directory].

William married Winifred ____ on 5 September 1933 at Long Beach, California. (W. D. Belden in his 1936 diary indicates that a Hazel FERGUSON was Winifred's niece.) The 1936 Long Beach Phone Directory shows William and Winifred living on 1623 E. Broadway; this is the address William D. BELDEN has for William in his 1936 diary. This diary indicates that William and Winifred separated in June 1936; they were divorced by 28 November 1939 [Houston Co. Warranty Deed, Bk. 143, p. 525].

His death certificate indicates that he had resided in California since 1926, and that his occupation was a realtor. His sister, Mrs. Anstis Downing Belden Patchin, is listed as the informant on the death certificate; she resided at William's residence.

William's remains were cremated at Long Beach Crematory, Long Beach, California on 18 November 1942.
