Elisha Hoag Jr. was the son of Elisha Hoag Sr. (1746-1772) and Elizabeth Hoag (1746-1837), who were second cousins. Elisha Sr. was the son of Joseph Hoag & Jemima Jenkins. Elizabeth Hoag was the daughter of Stephen Hoag and Anna Hunt. As second cousins, they shared the same Great Grandfather John Hoag (1643-1728). John Hoag was a magistrate in Newbury, Massachusetts who took a stand against the witch trials and lost his position.

The subject of this memorial, Elisha Jr lost his father just three weeks before his birth. His father, Elisha Hoag Sr. was killed in 1773 in a sawmill accident at the Oblong, Pawling, NY. In approximately 1779, six year old Elisha Jr. traveled with his Uncle Jonathan Hoag (1754-1817) (mother's brother) on horseback from the Oblong, north, to resettle in Easton, New York.

Elisha Jr. married Ruth Thomas in 1795.

They had five children:
Anna Hoag Gifford 1795 – 1884
Jonathan Hoag 1798 – 1887
Ruth Hoag Slocum 1803 – 1866
Eliza Hoag 1804 – 1820
Mary D. Hoag Ives Batty 1813 – 1911
