W. H. Bray homesteaded here from Tennessee, in 1873. He was the first Democrat sheriff of Wilson County elected to office and the first to use the new county jail built in 1897. It was supposed to be fireproof and held 12 prisoners.

He ran a grocery store on south 4th street with sons Jesse and James Ernest Bray.

He married Ethel Eunice Pearson 6 January 1892 at Fredonia, Wilson, KS.
