Orpha Nellie Wroe, daughter of Harriet (Burns) Wroe and James LeRoy Wroe, was born near Lima, Iowa. At an early age, she moved by covered wagon with her parents, 2 sisters, and 6 brothers, to Wisconsin. Later the family moved to Minnesota before settling in South Dakota. Nellie, as she was always called, graduated from Valley Springs High School. While there, she met her husband to be, Aaron Nelson Shafer. They were united in marriage on June 18, 1914 at Valley Springs.
After their marriage, the couple settled in Sioux Falls. They raised their 3 children, Wendell, Elden, and Barbara, at Wahoo Lodge Gardens Nursery, Dairy and Farm south of Sioux Falls. Nellie was an accomplished needle craftperson having started as a milliner and dressmaker. She was deft at ornamental wood carving, gave many entertaining and teaching programs with her wool dyeing, carding and spinning with an antique spinning wheel and turning yarn into useful afghans and clothing. Mrs. Shafer was active as an adult in 4-H and P.T.A. during the 1920's and 1930's.
After WW II, the Shafers moved east of Sioux Falls near Brandon where they established Three Rivers Nursery and farm. She was a professional landscaper and florist and later became an amateur hybridizer. Horticulture was a consuming interest throughout her life.
Nellie published a book of poems and stories titled "Orpha Nell". She also was published in local newspapers as well as having many unpublished stories and poems. Mrs. Shafer also wrote and directed plays. She was a member of Bardics Round Table, the South Dakota State Poetry Society, was published in the official monthly Bardics organ publication, the Pasque Petals, was a member of the Tri-State Garden Club, the Garretson Study Club, the Sioux Falls Garden Club, the Rock Hounds, the Minnehaha County Historical Society, the Sioux Falls Camera Club, and the Civic Fine Arts Society.
Nellie travelled all 50 of the United States and beyond but South Dakota was home sweet home. Nellie had a long and active life with many challenges met. She was a many faceted lady.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Elden Sr., Kennewick, WA; her daughter, Mrs. Barbara (C.L.) Kraemer, Arlington, Texas; 7 grandchildren, Patricia, Elden Jr., Robert, George, James, Elaine and Debara Kraemer Crowell; 11 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 10, 1983; a son, Wendell; 2 granchildren, James C. Kraemer and Douglas A. Kraemer; 7 brothers; and 2 sisters.
Relatives and friends gathered with the family for refreshments and fellowship at the American Legion Hall in Valley Springs following the committal service.
