George Lewis Allen Sr., 90, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Greenview Cemetery, with military graveside rites.
Mr. Allen was born in Alamance County, to the late Jerry Harrison and Iona Lewis Allen.
He was the oldest male member, more than 80 years, of First United Methodist Church. He was faithful in his commitment, holding many offices and leadership positions in the church, including chairman of the board. He was also a participant in "The Living Last Supper" performance for three years.
He attended UNC-Chapel Hill.
He served in the U.S. Army, the 65th Division, Artillery, during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
Mr. Allen retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a rural postal carrier, serving Route 3 and Route 1 for more than 37 years.
He was the former president of both the National Association of Federal Employees and the Local Rural Letter Carriers Association.
He was a member of the first class of the Rockingham Community College, Fine Woodworking Department.
He was an accomplished craftsman in woodworking and metal fabricating and enjoyed training and sharing his knowledge with others.
