He was born August 30,1938 at Hill City, the son of Dale E. and Sylvia F. (Griswould) Wathen. He lived in Plainville and attended schools there. As a young man he began working as a farmhand in Hill City.
He moved to Wichita in the late 1960s and began working for Wichita Paper Company as a machine operator.
He continued his employment there until 1997.
He moved to Hays, then relocated to Russell in February of 2003.
He married Carolyn Siddall. She died in 1998. He later married Leona Leonhardt on October 31,1999 in Hays.
He had recently been attending the Faith Evangelical Church in Russell.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Wathen, of the home, a daughter, Lori Wathen, Wichita, a son, Harold Scantlin, Oklahoma City, Ok; a stepdaughter, Robin Buckman, Tulsa, Ok.; a stepson, Jeffrey Siddall, Wichita; four sisters, Dolleita Hunter, Plainville; Kay Reiter, Russell; Joyce Knoll, Ignacio, Co.; and Faelieen Crafton, Wichita; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two
brothers, Dale Wathen,Jr ; and Robert Dale Wathen; and two sisters, Romona Schescke and Maedean Wathen.
Graveside services and interment are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, January 22 at the Russell City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday
at Pohlman-Heise Mortuary in Russell.
Memorials are suggested to the Francis Wathen Memorial Fund which will be designated later by his family and may be sent in care of Pohlman-Heise Mortuary, 610 N. Maple St.
