Miss Clara Crane Dies in Dalton; Was Member of Distinguished Berkshire Family:
Dalton, July 11. - Miss Clara Loomis Crane, 82, died at 6 o'clock last evening at her home, 84 Main Street, where she was born and had always lived. She had been ill several months.
Miss Crane was the last of a generation of which the late Winthrop Murray Crane, United States Senator, was a distinguished member.
She was born March 13, 1856, the daughter of Zenas Marshall and Louise (Laflin) Crane. She attended the old Maplewood Institute, Pittsfield and Miss Porter's School, Farmington, Conn. One of her chief interests was the First Congregational Church of which she was a member for 60 years. She was a member of the corporation of the House of Mercy. She was a lay leader in the church's missionary organization and a member of the Berkshire Branch, Women's Board of Missions.
She was also interested in the Berkhire County Home for Aged Women, Pittsfield, which was founded by her brothers, W. Murray Crane and Zenas Crane. She was chairman of the committee on admissions for several years.
As a member of the town's 150th anniversary committee in 1934, Miss Cranes's researches provided a considerable portion of the material published at the time in book form. Mrs. Gertrude K. Bedell who lived with Miss Crane was her devoted companion six years.
The survivors are three nieces, Mrs. Samuel Gilbert Colt, Pittsfield; Mrs. Caroline Edith Bates, Dalton; and Miss Louise Crane, New York City; and three nephews, Winthrop M. Crane Jr., Bruce Crane and Stephen Crane, all of Dalton; also 15 grand nieces and nephews, 24 great grand nieces and nephews and one great-great grand nephew. Senator Crane and Winthrop M. Crane Jr. made their home with Miss Crane from 1889 to 1905. Mrs. William L. Paddock of Dalton and Mrs. Herbert Johnson of Boston are first cousins.
The funeral will be held at 4 tomorrow at the home. Rev. Ralph Moore Timberlake of Boston, former local pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Main Street Cemetery.
