Bruce Armond Cooper, 82, died Sept. 22, 2011.

He was born Dec. 2, 1928, to Luster and Mina (Nicol) Cooper in Silverton, Ore. He graduated from Silverton High School in 1947 after being discharged from the Merchant Marines. Bruce served in the National Guard during the Korean War.

A lifelong Mason, Bruce moved to the Longview area in 1957 with his wife, Carroll and three children, Cheri, Jennifer and Dale. Bruce became the Union 76 distributor in Kelso. He started Gro-n-Control in 1962 and later sold it in the 1980's. Bruce Cooper Oil Inc., merged with his son Dale's business, Cooper Oil Inc., in 1988, later selling in 2004 to Wilcox and Flegel Oil Co.

Bruce had many interests and hobbies, particularly Birmingham Roller Pigeons, model airplanes, hunting and boating. Bruce wrote many articles published in national magazines on these subjects. His latest works were a compilation of the best locations to anchor and catch crab in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, and an autobiography of his life.

Bruce was a founding member of the LCC Booster Club, and a member of the Longview Country Club and Columbia River Yacht Club, where he served as commodore in 1995. Bruce and his friends, Bill Strader and Butch Hayrynen formed the Honky Tonks Band. They played at many charitable events and regularly at Campus Towers retirement home.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joan "Jo" Biggerstaff.

Bruce leaves behind many friends and family, six grandchildren and a great-grandson who will always remember him fondly.

A tribute of his life is planned for 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at Northlake Baptist Church.
