Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the United States Marine Corps during the United States' suppression of the insurrection of the Philippine Islands after the Spanish-American War, and was awarded the CMOH for his bravery there. His citation reads "For distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in battle, while with the 8th Army Corps on 25, 27, 29 March, and 4 April 1899." He rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
