Cadet Eugene Byrne, Class of 1910, age 22, died from an injury sustained while playing in the 1909 Army-Harvard football game. His death resulted in the West Point superintendent cancelling the remainder of that year's football season, including the Army-Navy game. Cadet Byrne's funeral service was held on November 2 in the Catholic chapel and burial took place in the post cemetery with full military honors and the entire corps of cadets in attendance.
