Son of Baron John Rodolph DeSteiguer I,founder of the Swiss Colony in Athens Co., Ohio, and his first wife, Wilhelmina Muller. He was raised in Switzerland and came to America with his father and stepmother in 1819. He married first Laura Ames and second Melissa Nelson, who later married Edward B. Morris. He had 13 children. He pioneered the salt and wool businesses in Athens County, Ohio. He was an elder and trustee of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He spent his life in Athens County, Ohio, and died in St. Louis, Missouri, while on a visit there.

He is buried next to his first wife.
