Julia Ann Nicolazzo Bridges passed with peaceful dignity into eternal rest Tuesday, May 7, 2007, in Sarasota, Fla., surrounded by her children and loved ones.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who lived every day of her life for her family. Every story about Julia included her extended family or her own precious, much-loved children, grandchildren or great grandson.

Julia was born in the small town of Kane June 25, 1931, to Carl and Rose Bifano Nicolazzo, the second of seven children. Throughout the years, despite miles and other commitments, she remained close to her brothers and sisters. A son-in-law affectionately dubbed the girls "The Dolly Sisters".

After high school, Julia joined the USAF where she met and married James Bridges. They lived in several states throughout his military career, finally retiring to Sarasota in 1971. They had three daughters and twin sons whom she loved dearly. As she did for herself, she gave her children roots and wings. Her children would use their wings to return to visit her often.

She was an old-fashioned matriarch in the truest sense of the word. She did for her family at every opportunity, always putting them first, even when her health began to fail. She was a talented, creative cook and a wonderful baker. She lovingly prepared meals and opened her home to others. While in the military, she frequently invited servicemen to share holiday dinners. There was always room for one more at her table, always something to celebrate.

She was a doting grandmother who sent cards with her signature dollar bill for even the smallest of occasions such as St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July and school progress reports. She loved to play cards and bingo and spoil her grandkids with special treats she baked or treasures she found while out "garaging" with her sister, Kate.

Our sweet and colorful memories will forever comfort us in our times of sadness that will come from missing a life as great as hers.

She is survived by her children; Sheri Bridges of Winston-Salem, N.C., Diane (Jeff) Williams of Cary, N.C., Terri (Bill) McCoy of Sarasota, Fla., David Bridges and Paul (Beth) Bridges of Napa, Calif.; her grandchildren; Elyse (Bobby) Lessig, Emmary and Ellyson Williams, Spencer and Madison Bridges; her great grandson, Austin Lessig; her siblings, Katherine Chiono, Josephine Brothers, Robert "Tuna" Niccolazzo, William (Linda) Nicolazzo and Anne Jerman; special family members Philipp Harper, Sherry Bridges and Julie Andrews; nephews and nieces Jimmy, Bernie, Frank, Michele, Melissa, Annjanette, Frank and a large extended family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Francis "Sonny" Nicolazzo.

Services in Sarasota were private. Friends will be received Saturday in the gathering space at St. Callistus Church from 9 a.m. until a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Entombment will be at St. Callistus Mausoleum.

Donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota C/O Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. or to a local ice cream stand on your next outing with your family.
