Howie served in the United States Army, Company B, 2D Ranger Infantry Battalion from September 30, 1943 to January 7, 1946. He received an honorable discharge for his services. The battles and campaigns he served in were: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received a good conduct medal, a European-African-Middle Eastern theatre service medal, a lapel pin and three overseas service bars.
