Hugh Benjamin Truex

Jackson, TN - Hugh Benjamin Truex, passed away on December 29, 2011 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He died very peacefully surrounded by his family.

He was born on October 17, 1922 in Jackson, TN to the late Spencer Allen Truex and Lida Bell Hicks Truex. He was a graduate of Jackson High School and Baylor University. He also attended Northwestern University. He served in Europe in World War II in the 701st Medium Tank Battalion, Company C. In his last year of service, he received a bronze star medal for heroic achievement in Germany. He was married to Mattie Belle McGowan who preceded him in death.

Besides a strong love for the community, Hugh had exceptional love for his family and friends; its loyalty knew few bounds. His father started Truex Chevrolet in 1915. Hugh took over the business in 1946 and owned and operated from 1946 until 1990. He served on the University of Tennessee Development Council and the Athletic Board for several years as well as being on the Board of Directors at First National Bank for several years. Additionally, he was a member of Evangelical Community Church, Jackson Rotary Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was an avid sportsman, tennis player, and golfer (beginning at a young age with his father). He was dedicated to UT football and Lady Vols basketball.

Hugh is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judy Lohman Truex; son, Hugh Benjamin Truex, Jr. of Jackson, Jon Lohman Burks of Franklin, TN and Jil Burks Cooper (Brent) of Jackson; six grandchildren, Jessica Truex Earnest (Johnny), Harrison Truex (Katie), Will Cooper, Amanda Cooper, Jon Franklin Lohman Burks and Linzi Ann Burks; three great grandchildren, Maggie, Benjamin and Wes Earnest.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. Spencer Allen Truex; uncle, Hugh Webb Hicks.

Visitation with the family is Tuesday, January 3, 2012 from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. at George A. Smith & Sons North Chapel. A 2 p.m. graveside service will follow at Hollywood Cemetery in Jackson. Don Winter will officiate.
