Although 1900 census data indicates a birth in Dec 1853 and his stone indicates a birth year of 1854, I believe he was the son of John and Sarah Lightbody (see note below about another George C Lightbody who was born about 1854, also in Bath Maine).

Undoubtedly he died in Lynn Mass (Essex County) as he was living there in 1900 and his wife Emma remained in Lynn according to the 1910 census.

A quick look at records on Ancestry gives us :

1860 - living in Bath Maine with his parents : John, age 40, born about 1820 in New York, working as a carpenter; Sarah, age 37, born about 1823 in Nova Scotia Canada . It would appear that his parents moved from Nova Scotia to Maine between 1847 and 1850. George is listed as being 8, born about 1852 in Maine, most likely Bath. Siblings to George :
- James S, age 18, born about 1842 in Nova Scotia, working as a carpenter
- John W, age 16, born about 1844 in Nova Scotia, working as a fisherman
- Lettie, age 14, born about 1846 in Nova Scotia, no occupation
- Mary B, age 12, born about 1848 in Nov Scotia
- Amanda M, age 10, born about 1850 in Maine
- Charles E, age 6, born about 1854 in Maine
- Margarete, age 3, born about 1857 in Maine

1870 - living in Hyde Park Mass with his parents where his father is working as a laborer. George is listed as 18 and working as a carpenter. Siblings to George :
- Charles 16 working as a painter
- Melvina (Amanda M in 1860 census) 20 no occupation
- Mary (Margarete in 1860 census) 22 no occupation
- Frederick, age 9, born about 1851 in Maine
- John, age 6, born about 1864 in Maine
Also listed : Thomas Deering a 24 year old musician, and his 24 year old wife Agnes (this might be his sister who was listed as Lettie in the 1860 census).

1875/6 - George marries Emma A Jones (estimated from 1900 census).

1880 - living in Seabrook NH with his wife Emma he is listed as 28, working as a railroad employee, Emma is listed as 21 and working for a shoe factory. Their son Clarance S is listed as age 5, born about 1875 in NH, most likely Seabrook.

1897 - involved in a train crash as the conductor of train 253 : see the "photo" of a newspaper clipping.

1900 - living at 292 Essex St in Lynn Mass with his wife Emma. His birth is given as Dec 1853, hers as Sept 1860. He is working as a brakeman, she is working as a salesman. They have been married 25 years (1875 ?) and both of their 2 children are still living, and are listed here :
- Clarence born June 1877
- Harry S born July 1885
Also listed : Fred Campbell, born Aug 1878 in Mass, he is working as a hostler (someone who works on trains after they have finished with their run).

More about his son Clarence :

NH Birth and Christening Records list his birth as 31 Mar 1876 in Seabrook NH, parents : George and Emma Lightbody, ethnicity Canadian.

1910 census indicates he is living with his wife at 12 Hickborn St in Revere Mass, in the household of Elmer G and Harriett J Legro. Clarence is working as a bill clerk for a railroad. They have been married for 9 years (1901 ?) and their only child is listed : Henry S, age 4 months.

1914 City Directory for Revere Mass lists his address as 1 Green St, a freight clerk for B & M railroad.

Clarence's 1918 WW I card gives a middle name of Spencer, a birth of 11 June 1875 (to avoid being enlisted ?), working as a freight clerk for the US Railroad Administration, District 13, North Station in Boston Mass. It lists an address of 1 Green St in Revere Mass, and his nearest relative appears to be his wife : Margaret Ellen Lightbody, same address. His description is : medium height and build, blue eyes, brown hair.

The 1920 census indicates Clarence and Margaret were living at 1 Green St in Revere Mass (interesting to note that Mary Loden, see 1930 census, is listed near the top of the same census page). Clarence is working as a clerk for the railroad. Their son Henry is also listed.

1929 City Directory for Revere Mass lists his address as 324 Winthrop Ave.

The 1930 census indicates Clarence and Margaret were married for 24 years then (1906 ?). Their 20 year old son Henry is living with them where they are renting from Mary Loden in what appears to be a four family house at 326 Winthrop Ave in Revere Mass. Clarance is working as a clerk for the railroad, Henry is working as a clerk in an office.

1940 City Directory for Revere Mass lists his address as 406 Parkway, an employee of the B & M railroad. His son Henry is also listed at the same address, working as a clerk.

More about his son Henry :

NH Birth and Christening Records list the birth of a male 5 July 1883 in Seabrook NH, parents : George C Lightbody, Emma A Jones.

Mass Town Vital Collection lists his marriage 25 Dec 1904 in Newburyport Mass to Gertrude A Watton. He is 21, parents : George C and Emma A Jones. She is 18, parents : Charles B Watton and Clara Eaton.

The "other" George C Lightbody :

Census data indicates there was another George C Lightbody who was born about 1854 in Bath Maine and although the birth year on this stone is 1854, I don't believe he is "our" George C Lightbody.

His parents were Francis and Ann Lightbody and I found him living with them in the 1870 census.

Maine Marriage Records list his marriage 13 Sept 1877 in Bath Maine to Jessie E McKay.

I found George and Jessie living in bath Maine in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census. In the 1920 and 1930 census George is a widow living with his son Leonard in Bath Maine. In the 1900 census, this George has a birth of May 1855, married for 24 years, and 3 of their 4 children are still living.

Unfortunately, he also has a son Clarence, born June 1884 in Maine.

I only point this out to help others who may be doing research on the Lightbody family.
