Alvin Harvey Holt was the owner of the Holt Hotel located in Jamestown around the corner of where the courthouse is now . There was a livery stable where Dabney's Grocery was and people left their horses and buggies there when they stayed at the hotel. Many weddings, receptions, birthday parties were held at the old hotel and it was a very popular place. There were even apartments to rent in it. Some shops were located there too. Lawless Shoe Repair shop owned by O. D. Lawless was in the hotel, Theo Austin had his offices there and Ralph Williams even had a furniture store inside the hotel and B S Kinnett ran it for him. The marshall's office was in it too. Ed Womack accepted position with Gabehart Barber Shop which was in the hotel and Cora Sullivan was there every Wednesday and Saturday buying cream for the Sugar Creek Creamery Company. In 1950 a portion of the old Holt Hotel Bldg was razed to make room for a new and modern bldg two stories high with full basement. Sievers Bates put in a furniture store in part of the old building. The rest of the old hotel was sold at auction in 1955 and Taylor Wooten was successful bidder at the auction of the old Holt Hotel. He began immediately wrecking the rest of the building. It must have been a huge place with so many stores in it as well as an apartment. When the dam was being built some of the employees from it stayed there. One man, Alvin Cullen Pyle, about 47, died at his apt at Holt Hotel. He was one of the ones working at the dam. The Blue Grass Ice Cream Shop was next door to it and sold Coney Islands for a nickel and the library was on the other side with Flora Long being the librarian.
