Hal Winfield Kaylor, 89, of Conover, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011. Born May 30, 1922, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Oren Winfield and Vertie Lena Sigmon Kaylor. He was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, where he was a deacon and elder, member of the Lutheran Laymen's League, and former Sunday School superintendent. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 106th Engineer Combat Battalion, 31st Division, A-Company during WWII. He had worked for over 33 years for Southern Furniture Company and then co-founded and co-owned Pem-Kay Furniture Company. He was a member and past commander of Newton American Legion Post 16, former president and Cattleman of the Year and member of the Catawba Valley Cattlemen's Association. Hal was a member of the Conover City Council for 28 years, including several years as Mayor Pro-tem, and was involved in the Western Piedmont Council of Government. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law; Martha K. Walker, Margie K. Abernethy and her husband, Doc, Maxine K. Isenhower and her husband, Bob, and Harry Bolick and his son-in-law, Ted Spencer.

service of remembrance will be held at 3:30 p.m Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Con-over. Rev. A. Mark Schudde will officiate. Burial will be held in Conover City Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.
