Dr. Julius Clay Madison, 98, died on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, as a result of complications from pneumonia.

For 47 years he served as a minister in the Western Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was born in 1908 to Thomas Jefferson and Minnie Whit Madison on a farm in the Union Grove area of North Iredell County. He was the youngest of seven brothers and sisters.

He was predeceased by his parents, a son David Madison in 1997, five siblings and a niece.

Surviving him is his wife of 70 years, Alma Martin Madison, 97, resident of the Givens Estates. In the hospital in 1934, he met the prettiest girl he'd ever seen, who happened to be an R.N. and was his assigned nurse. In 1936 the two were married. He is also survived by a daughter, Florence M. Widis and her husband Larry Widis of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Ashley L. Widis and Amy R. Widis, of Charlotte; and a brother, Graham Madison, age 102, now residing in a retirement home in Winston-Salem.

Educated in the Iredell County schools, he then graduated from High Point College in 1932 with the goal of becoming an English teacher until, while serving as a part-time minister at United Methodist Church in High Point, he decided his goals had changed and was later ordained as a United Methodist Church minister.

He served High Point College and later High Point University for more than 50 years as a trustee and was a life member of the Board of Trustees at the time of his death. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by High Point College in 1953.

In 1932-1933, he attended the University of Chicago for theological training and spent several semesters at Duke University's Divinity School. He also served as a 1st. Lt. U.S. Army Chaplain for one year and worked with young men in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) during the Great Depression.

During his years in the ministry, he served at Central United Methodist Church, Concord; First United Methodist Church, Waynesville; First United Methodist Church, Hickory; First United Methodist, High Point; First United Methodist Church, Morganton; Myers Park United Methodist Church, Charlotte and West Market United Methodist Church, Greensboro. He also served as district superintendent for the Greensboro and Asheville districts, and was the initial director of the program council. In addition he was president of the conference of the Board of Evangelism; President of the conference Board of Missions; delegate to various general conferences, jurisdictional conferences; was a delegate to world conference in London, England and in 1947 delegate to the 100th anniversary celebration of Methodism in China.

After retirement, he and Alma Madison lived in Lake Junaluska, and most recently have been residents of The Givens Estates United Methodist Retirement Community. He was a driving force in the creation of Givens (for which by many it is affectionately known) and for three years after his retirement, served as director of development, sharing the excitement of Givens while creating an endowment. He was particularly active and proud with his work resulting in the establishment of the Supplemental Assistance Fund, enabling those less financially able to enjoy the retirement community

An avid golfer, as recently as this past September, he played nine holes, still demonstrating his competitive spirit. Not a particularly long hitter, he knew how to hit it straight. An enthusiastic Duke fan, he rarely missed a televised Duke basketball game and regularly discussed the action as it occurred while on the phone with friends. Visitation will be at noon today at the First United Methodist Church and the funeral service at 1 pm at the church. Internment will immediately follow at Garrett Hillcrest Cemetery, Waynesville. Garrett Funeral Home is in charge.
