Born in Bohemia (likely from around the area of Pilžen & Domažlice in the present day Czech Republic); Martin was the son of Josef & Mary (Kust) Sladky.

Martin immigrated to America around 1885-1887.

On 15 June 1899, Martin married Theresa Rezacek in Montpelier (Township)in Kewaunee County, WI; she was age 17, he was 24. Theresa was the eighth of nine children {six daughters & three sons} born to Josef & Katherina (Hana) Rezacek.

For part of his life he was a farmer, but in the 1900 & 1910 Federal Census records he was working as a laborer in a lumber mill. He was also listed as a laborer in Wausau City Directories from 1914-1929. By 1930 he was so ill that he was not working when the Census was enumerated.
