He attended Grace Baptist Church. He was a former rodeo bull rider and a horse trainer.
Surviving are daughters, Christie Russell of Randleman, Anne Jerrall of Galax, Va.; sons, Buzzy Atkins of Liberty, Andy Atkins of Greensboro; sister, Dot Lohr of Greensboro; brother, Friel Atkins Jr. of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
