Ricard was born to Margaret (O'SULLIVAN) and Denis BURKE in Cloonareague, Kinneigh, Co. Cork, Ireland. Cluain Aimhréidh, Cinn Eich. He had 4 sisters and 7 brothers.
In 1881, aged 43, he eloped with and married Nora SHEEHY, their children: Nellie and Ricard.
Fighter in the U S Civil War (Captain? Colonel?). Active in Fenian struggles for independence for Ireland. Died in Chicago.

Ricard O'Sillivan Burke (circa 1866), perhaps one of the most famous Fenians as Burke was mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses.

Served in the Civil War as a QM Sgt 15th NY Engineers and later promoted to 1st Lt. and placed in charge of Union fortification during the siege of Peterburg, VA where he was mustered out as a captain. In 1865, he was traveled to Ireland then England for the Fenian cause and arrested at Liverpool and again in 1867 at London as a Fenian and spent time in prison there. He was released on parole, went back to Ireland, and returned to the United States in 1873. He later worked for the US War Department in DC.
