Alanson Josiah Cleveland born 12 Mar 1822 Ulysses, Tompkins, New York, son of Josiah Cleveland (1773-1853) and Fanny Lathrop (1778-1838), died Jul 1894 Los Angeles, California.
Alanson enlisted in the United States Army in 28 Jun 1847 at Dansville, Steuben, New York. His enlistment record indicates he was 25 years of age, hazel eyes, dark hair and fair complexion; a resident of New York City with occupation of schoolteacher and Capt. Marcy performed the enlistment. He was discharged 23 Jun 1848 at Ft. Columbus, NY upon the expiration of service with the rank of Private. He returned home where in 1850 he is residing in Catharine, Chemung, New York with the profession of schoolteacher.
Alanson married on 20 Jul 1851 at Catharine, Schuyler, New York to Lucy Minerva Lyon born 9 Jul 1829 at Catharine, Tioga (now part of Schuyler County), New York, daughter of Walter Lyon (1797-1882) and Nancy Eliza Coe (1803-1885). Lucy died 1911 and is interred here with her husband.
At the first election held after the formation of Schuyler County, New York held May 9, 1854, he was among the first officers elected for the township of Cayuta, holding the position of sealer of weights and measures. The family then moved to Elmira, Chemung New York where in 1863 where Alanson is listed in the city directory with his occupation as Lawyer and home in the city. After the Civil War the family left New York, first settling in Peoria, Illinois where their children married and later moved all together to Los Angeles by the early 1890's.
Alanson and Lucy are the parents of two children:
Walter Lyon Cleveland born 26 Feb 1856 Catharine, Schuyler, New York died after 1930 Glendale, Los Angeles, California; he married Alice Anderson (1854 - bef 1930) with two sons, Leroy Marion Lyon Cleveland (1880-1966) and Bertrand Alanson Cleveland (1889-1974).
Mary France "Mamie" Cleveland born 20 Aug 1858 Catharine, Schuyler, New York died bef 1894 Los Angeles, California; she married William Jesse Steube (1858-1942) with one son, Louis Alanson Steube (1886-1887).
