Joseph Pickens Douglas married to Anne Marie Loftin in 1851 in Montgomery, Alabama. Joseph and his wife, Anne migrated from Alabama to Texas in 1853. They settled on land on the Smith/Cherokee County line.

Joseph and his brothers-in-law, William Pitt Loftin and Byron Rhome founded the town of Etna just west of (present day) Bullard.
