According to the SSDI and his World War I draft registration his date of birth was May 9, 1888. He is listed as the one year old son of James and Cecelia on the 1885 Minnesota census, making his birth year 1884.

He was born in an apartment in the warehouse district to Cecilia (Cecelia) Frances Schaaf Degler (1864-1930) and James Henry (Gust) Degler (1861-1887). He was their only child, as his father died very young. In the 1885 Minneapolis City directory, James Henry Degler is listed as a "ship clk" (shipping clerk) working for the "Milwaukee B Cor r 418 2d av N." That's the Milwaukee Brewing Company.
