Noted Green Bay Surgeon Is Dead

Dr. John R. Minahan, Prominent Citizen, to Be Buried Saturday

Green Bay - Dr. John Roger Minahan, 78, one of the best known surgeons in Wisconsin, died at his home last night of pneumonia. He bad been ill for two months.

Dr. Minahan attracted widespread attention in 1923 when he extracted a nail from the left lung of an 18 year-old girl. He lifted the girl's heart and held it in his hand while he completed the operation. The girl recovered.

After graduating from Oshkosh Normal school, Dr. Minahan taught for four years before enrolling at Rush Medical college, Chicago. He began practice of medicine here in 1891 and with his brother, the late Robert K. Minahan, formed the Minahan clinic.

He continued to practice here until stricken with pneumonia two months ago.

Dr. Minahan was active in civic affairs. He was at the time of his death, president of the Bank of Sturgeon Bay and the People's Trust and Savings bank of Green Bay and a director of two large industrial concerns. He presented St. Norbert college, De Pere, with an athletic field and a stadium named after him and donated large sums to the school for its building fund. He was a former mayor of Green Bay.

Survivors include the widow, Hattie, one brother, V. L Minahan, Green Bay publisher, and three sisters; Miss Ellen Minahan, Milwaukee; Mrs. Mary Hector, Green Bay and Mrs. Grace Philleo, Sandiego, Calif.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church, De Pere. Members of the Norbertine Order of St. Norbert college will direct the services.
