Mr. Huffman was born Nov. 9, 1937, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Ward Lee and surviving his Mother.
In 1956, he graduated from Montevideo High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. J.C. was a member of the Izaak Walton League of America, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chapter, where he currently served on the board of directors. He was also a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. J.C. was a lifetime member of Hose Company No. 4.
In 2001, he retired after 37 years with the Harrisonburg Fire Department as Deputy Fire Chief. J.C. was a volunteer firefighter right out of high school, and after six years of volunteering became a paid member of the force when a position opened. Over the course of his years in the department, J.C. has been a station commander, shift supervisor, training officer, and captain of operations. He has attended numerous courses dealing with firefighting, hazardous materials, training, investigation, and management at various universities as well as the National Fire Academy. J.C. was one of the first fire officers in the United States selected to attend the Executive Development Course at the National Fire Academy. He was also one of the first paid captains in the Harrisonburg Fire Department and the City's first Deputy Fire Chief. He was also on the State Hazmat Regional Response Team.
On May 24, 1968, he married his wife, who survives.
In addition to his wife and mother, J.C. is survived by a daughter, Melissa Huffman Malabad and husband, Paul, of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Elinor Huffman Botkin and husband, Joe, of Staunton, Wilma Lee Huffman Wolfe and husband, Jon, of Macon, Ga.; and two grandsons, Anthony Stuart and Daniel Jacob Malabad; two nieces and six nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg with Pastor Jim Grogan and Chaplain Don Kuhns officiating.
Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
Friends may also visit the family at the Malabad residence at 2859 Greenway Court in Harrisonburg at anytime.
