Frontier Peace Officer. Cash Sampson served at various times as the sheriff of Delta County, Colorado, as a state brand inspector and as a deputy United States marshal. During the troubles between cattlemen and sheepmen on Colorado's Western Slope, Ben Lowe, a sometime cattle rustler, was involved in killing hundreds of sheep in an effort to drive the sheep men out of business. As a state brand inspector, Sampson was involved with the investigations into the men responsible for the sheep killings. Bad blood developed between Sampson and Ben Lowe, resulting in a gunfight that took place in Escalante Canyon between Delta and Grand Junction, Colorado. Both men were killed in the fight. Lowe is also buried in the Delta Cemetery a short distance from Sampson.
