He grew up in Racine, Ohio. As a young man, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he pursued a successful career in business and was active in the Shrine Club. He married, but his wife died before they had children. In 1899, on petition of his brother Jared Cone Ross, he was declared insane by a court in Chicago. The cause of his insanity was syphilis. He was moved to Racine, Ohio, where he was cared for by his siblings and where he lived until his death in 1909.
