War Vet, top HHS athlete, worked in mill, drove truck.
A graveside celebration of life service will be held Wednesday for Gene E. Blair Sr. of 3645 E. State St., Hermitage. He passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 14, 2005, in his residence. He was 55.
Mr. Blair was born Jan. 10, 1950, in Sharon, a son of Eugene H. and Jacqueline A. Urban Blair.
He was a lifelong area resident and a 1968 alumnus of Hickory High School, Hermitage.
After his graduation, he was drafted into the Army and served during the Vietnam conflict, participating in combat in 1971 and 1972. Honorably discharged on July 1, 1975, Gene was extremely proud and honored to serve his country.
Prior to the closing of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, Gene worked in the utility department for more than 24 years. He was later employed as a truck driver for the former J&L Distributing.
He was a member of United Steelworkers and Sons of Italy, Shenango Valley Lodge.
As an outstanding athlete in his prime, during high school Gene was a member of Hickory Hornet's football, baseball, basketball and track and field teams. He continued his love for baseball through the years and was a longtime member of Pepsi Cola softball team, where he led the league in home runs. He also coached T-ball and minor league baseball in Hermitage Little League and was a former coach for the VFW Hornet midget football team.
He was an avid golfer, enjoyed hunting and was a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Although Gene was known and loved by many, it was his family who brought him the most joy, particularly his grandchildren whom he adored. All will fondly remember him.
Surviving are: two sons, Gene "Geno" E. Blair, Jr. and Bryan B. Blair, both at home; a daughter Emily M. Kettering, Sharon; his mother, Jacqueline Blair, at home; three grandchildren, Killian and Kane Kettering and Marley Blair; a sister Sue E. Meszaros, wife of Jason Meszaros, Sharpsville; and three nephews, Tim, Terry and Adam Dye.
