SAMUEL MIRES
Samuel Davis Mires Passed away December 31, 2011 at the age of 79. Born January 5, 1932 in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, he graduated from Mt. Juliet High School and joined the Air Force in January 1950 at the age of 18. After considerable training, he was sent to Kempo, Korea in November of 1951 to serve as a medic and X-ray technician in the Korean War. He also served in Tripoli, Libya and Adana, Turkey before leaving the Air Force in 1958. Sam worked a short time for the Boeing Company before becoming an X-ray technician for the Veterans Administration at American Lake Hospital for 30 years. He also joined the US Army Reserve in 1958 and spent 28 years as an active reservist, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major, a position that had never been held before by a reservist. His hobbies included traveling in his motor home, building and flying model airplanes, and playing golf. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mires of Mt. Juliet, TN and brother Thomas Mires of the US Air Force. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Joanne Mires, sister Kathleen Spickard, brothers Hilton A. Mires and Jackie Mires, daughter Anita Mires, son Thomas Mires, stepdaughter Audrey Shaw, stepsons Terry Gilmore and Charles (Ted) Gilmore, 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. A heart felt thank you to the wonderful staff of Recollections at Narrows Glen, who provided a caring home to Sam over the last 15 months. A celebration of life will be held at the Aspen Chapel, Mt. View Cemetery in Lakewood, Washington on Sunday, January 8th, 2012 at 1 p.m. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org).
