Walter graduated from Princeton High School in 1908. His mother brought him to CA soon after, where his older brother Carl was already working.

WWI took Walter to Verdun, France in July 1918, with I company, 362nd infantry, 91st division. He was wounded, a bullet through his left forearm and a shrapnel injury to his back, in the Argonne drive. He claimed "It's nothing", in a letter to his mother. However, that wound kept him in a French hospital almost four months. The commander-in-chief reported him severely wounded. He gained 18 pounds while in the service, despite his wound.

Elsie completed eighth grade in Long Beach then went to trade school to learn tailoring and design. Walter and Elsie met at the Long Beach Steam Laundry, where they both worked. They were married in a noonday ceremony at the home of Elsie's parents, 1064 Hoffman Ave, Long Beach. The house was decorated with pink and white flowers. Elsie wore white satin and silk voile and carried a bouquet of pink and white rose buds, intermingled with baby breath and honeysuckle. The ceremony, which was attended only by members of the immediate families, was followed by a wedding breakfast. Immediately after their marriage, the Stormonts moved to Bakersfield. They purchased a one-bedroom house at 1420 Quincy St. in East Bakersfield, where they raised their twelve children. Walter worked for 35 years at the Family Service Laundry, before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion. Elsie spent the remainder of her days caring for their large family. She exercised her tailoring skills by remaking donated clothing into new clothes for her children. She was a strict, but loving, disciplinarian. All 12 children finished high school and more than half earned college degrees.
