George L. Carey was an all american athlete at Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.

   Following college, he moved to DePere, Wisconsin where he coached baseball, basketball and football at Saint Norbert College and where he eventually served as Athletic Director.

   During World War I, George served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery Reserve Corps.

   George was one of the first assistant coaches of the National Football league's Green Bay Packers from 1920-1921.

   George married Ceil M. Leist/Liest.

   In the late 1920's George returned to Massachusetts to work as an instructor at Worcester Boy's Trade School at Wheaton Square.

   George's World War II draft records describe him as 5'9" tall and weighing 240 pounds. He had gray eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion.

   Coach George Carey died in Worcester on Friday January 1, 1960. He leaves his wife, Celia M. (Liest) Carey; a daughter Jean M., wife of Ary Belland of Montreal, Canada; a brother Charles Carey of Worcester; a grandaughter, Miss Carol Belland of Montreal, Canada.
