Miranda Jane Barton was born about 1866 to Snowden B. Barton and Nancy Jane Athon in Wells County, Indiana. Her mother died between 1870 and 1874. Her father remarried and the family was living in Elkhart County, Indiana in 1880. It is not clear how they met, but Miranda met and married Edward Apple, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Apple of Whitley County, Indiana. The Bartons and Apples must have lived near each other at some point, as Edward's sister Loraine married Miranda's brother John. Miranda and Edward had 5 children, 2 (Fred and Charly) who died as infants. In 1890 the family moved to Iroquois County, Illinois. Miranda, it is said, contracted tuberculosis and passed away one year after the birth of her only daughter, Mary. Her grave is most likely unmarked.
