Marie Catherine Stevens was sometimes called "Kay" by her family members. She is one of four daughters and five children born to William Henry Frank Stevens and Mary "Mae" Fay Stevens. Her father died when she was only ten years old. Marie grew up in New York City, and lived in or near the city for most of her life.
She met John Lamar Hafford and they were married on 16 February 1941. Marie and John had three children, Patricia Gayle; John Steven and Mary Dale Hafford. They lived in Riverhead, Long Island during most of their marriage.
Marie was an accomplished business woman, creating and managing a credit bureau business and managing a set of apartments that she owned with her husband John on Long Island.
Marie's second husband was Stanley Sulzinski. They did not have any children together, but remained married until she died in April of 1966.
