SALEM - George W. Morrow, Jr. came to the end of a great life at the age of 92 on January 7, 2012. He was born on July 16, 1919, to George and Elizabeth Morrow in Pitcairn, Pa. He worked at a garage station and Allegheny Ludlum before being drafted into the Army in 1941. He earned an officer's commission and served in Europe in World War II as an infantry platoon commander, being awarded a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. Those he served with respected him and he was awarded a letter of commendation upon discharge. A number of the soldiers serving with him thanked him for bringing them safely through the war.

George met his life partner, Mildred (Millie) Weston in 1937, and they were married in 1943 shortly before he left for Europe. They spent 68 wonderful years together. They moved to Silverton in 1948 where they became faithful and active members of the Methodist Church. George worked for Portland General Electric Company for 36 years. George served on the Silverton School Board and was the master of the Silverton Masonic Lodge.

They moved to Salem in 1969, and joined the First Presbyterian Church where they took an active part, George having served as an elder and scripture reader. George was on the board of Northeast Salem Citizens Association, Toastmasters and in 1984 was given the Salem Key Citizens Award. After retirement in 1984, George spent his time working around his house and visiting with his many friends. Both he and Millie were always ready to lend a helping hand to others. Their home was always open and friendly to people.

George is survived by his wife, Millie, son George Morrow III, nieces and nephews, cousin Orville Jones and special friends, Mike and Chris Crossland.

Burial with military honors was at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 19, at 2 p.m. at Salem First Presbyterian Church, 770 Chemeketa Street NE, Salem.

Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
