NORTH RICHLAND HILLS -- H. Bruce Ayars, 87, died peacefully at home at Franklin Park at Home Town in North Richland Hills, TX on Saturday, February 5, 2011. Ayars was born in Wilmington, DE to George W. and Marion P. Ayars on November 11, 1923. He was a graduate of Dover High School and the University of Delaware. He was an Eagle Scout. At the end of his sophomore year in college, with his parents approval, Ayars volunteered for service with the US Army in World War II and saw action in the European Theater. When the Korean Conflict broke out, he volunteered for service in the US Naval Reserves and received a commission in the Supply Corps. Following the receipt of his B.S. in Business Administration, he became a Boy Scout Executive, and during a career spanning 37 years he held positions in local councils, on regional staffs, and at the national office in Philadelphia, PA, Easton, MD, Wilmington, DE, Roanoke, VA, Oakbrook, IL; North Brunswick, NJ, and Irving, TX. After early retirement from the Boy Scouts of America, Ayars immediately joined the United Way as a Division Director, directing the Combined Federal Campaign and coordinating the work of company campaign chairpersons. Ayars was an accomplished storyteller specializing in folktales from around the world. He was an active member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher. For fifteen years, he taught in the Senior Education Program at Tarrant County College's Northeast campus. Most notably, he facilitated the Great Books and Socratic Buffet discussion groups. And he was a member of the Masonic Order for 57 years. Realizing that success in his profession depended on the work of volunteers, he was committed to be one himself and thoughout his life he held 54 different volunteer positions in the communities he served. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 2701 Harwood Dr., Bedford, TX on Saturday, February 12 at 11 am. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dr. Miriam (Mimi) L. Ayars; son, George Michael Ayars of Charlotte, NC; daughter Janine Ayars Taylor of Raleigh, NC; son, Russell Vandenbroucke of Louisville, KY; as well as many bothers and sister-in-laws, grandchildren, nephews, and nieces who were very dear to him.
