Mildred "Millie" Lois South Cox 69, Indianapolis, passed away in her sleep on September 11, 2009. She had been in ill health for several years and will now join her late husband, James Ellis Cox. Millie was born on May 17, 1940 in Jamestown, TN to William Clyde and Vonnie Pearl South. She graduated from Kennard High School in 1957.
Countless little league baseball players on the various teams her husband coached knew Millie as "Team Mom". Countless other people she encountered along her journey knew her as a friend. Millie's love of children was boundless. Her love of cats was the same. Every life she touched was changed for the better. Everyone who knew Millie could never forget her. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening, traveling and working on her family ancestry.
Millie was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, serving in all offices, including president. For 26 years, Millie worked for the Indiana Credit Union League, the trade association representing Indiana's credit unions, serving as Vice-President of Governmental Affairs until her retirement in 2003.
Millie was a tireless advocate for credit unions both in Washington, D.C. and Indianapolis. Upon her retirement, Millie received many honors and recognitions including a Sagamore of the Wabash given to her by the late Governor Frank O'Bannon in 2003; a special resolution adopted by the Indiana General Assembly honoring her dedication and efforts on behalf of credit unions on April 21, 2003; a special resolution read into the Congressional Record by her friend, U.S. Representative Dan Burton in 2003; a resolution adopted by Indiana's credit unions at their 2003 Annual Meeting; and a national credit union award honoring her work in 2004. Each year the Indiana Credit Union Foundation awards the Millie Cox Award to a recipient that exemplifies Millie's qualities in credit union advocacy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ellis Cox, her parents, and a sister, Thelma. Millie is survived by her son, Curt Cox (Sherry) and her brother-in-law, Edwin T. Cox of Indianapolis; her sisters, Christina Neel, Linda Kay Phelps (Ray), New Castle, and Doris M. Barr (Gary), Indianapolis; her brothers, Clyde South (Pam), Knightstown, and Donald Wayne South (Sue), New Palestine; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins in Indiana, Texas, and Tennessee.
A celebration of Millie's life will be held on Wednesday, September 16 at 11 AM at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Washington Park East.
