BYRON BOOTH HAIRSTON

Byron Booth Hairston, 93, passed away at 3:30 PM on Sunday, January 15 at Floyd Medical Center from injuries sustained from a fall. He was surrounded by his loving family and dear friends as he went to be with Jesus.

Mr. Hairston was born in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia on August 23, 1918, son of the late Rev. Madison Palmer Hairston (1890-1976) and Susie Hulbert Booth Hairston (1890-1988). He was married to Mary Helen Turner on June 18, 1940 in Rome.

He was well-known for his warm, friendly personality, his witty humor, and was beloved by all who knew him. He was a friend to all. He loved flowers and tending plants, and enjoyed watching sports. In his younger days he was an avid motor cycle rider, and flew small planes as a solo pilot.

Mr. Hairston lived most of his life in Rome. He ran the Rome Trading Company before moving to Summerville. He owned and operated H & W Furniture in Trion for several years. After moving back to Rome, he worked for 16 years at local funeral homes: 9 years with Jennings Funeral Home and 7 years with Henderson and Sons before retiring. He became an ordained Deacon at Summerville First Baptist Church where he was an active Deacon, R.A. Leader, and choir member. In Rome he was a member of West Rome Baptist Church for the remainder of his years, having served as Deacon and choir member there also for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Janet Amason and Frances Watson, and a brother, Charles Madison Hairston, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis Ann and Richard Wand, Mary Carol and Dr. James C. Parker, and Jane Booth Zeiger, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are to be held in the chapel of the Parnick Jenning's Good Shepherd Funeral Home in Rome at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, January 18th with the Rev. Ken Oates officiating. Graveside rites and interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives during the hour before the funeral, 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Active pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law: Jarod Allred, Jason Allred, Kenny Podgurski, J. Tod Zeiger, II, Kip Jones, Jeff Sundahl, and great nephew Andy Ross. Knowles, Jimmy Jordan, Ed O. Parker, Sr., Raleigh Gribble, Bill Koback, C. L. Tate, and Scott Henson.
