Leroy Zessin was born May 23, 1905 at Madison, the son of Ferdinand and Emma Lentz Zessin. He died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln, February 9, 1978, at age 72.
He moved to Nebraska City at age of three and came to Weeping Water in February of 1918. He farmed in the area around Weeping Water and Elmwood most of his life. During a number of years he was employed by the Acce Seed Company at its Weeping Wter plant.
On June 9, 1928, he was married to Nettie Fern Ward. To this union was born one son, James Dale Zessin. He was preceded in death by Nettie on November 12, 1960.
On May 1, 1964, he was married to Mrs. Edna M. Dehning of Lincoln.
Leroy was a life-long member of the Christian Church most of the years at Weeping Water, and a few years as a member in Elmwood. He served as an elder in both churches. The Weeping Water church conferred upon him the honor of Elder Emeritus a few years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of Elmwood; one sister, Mrs. Lela Fitzpatrick of Lincoln; one brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Zessin of Yelm, Washington; one son, James, of Florala, Alabama; two stepsons, Roger Dehning, Topeka, Kans.; Daniel Dehning, Waverly; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Leona Eklund of Ryegate, Montana; four grandson, 8 step grandchildren, and one great step child, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday afternoon February 11, at 3 o'clock in the Christian Church in Weeping Water. Rev. Richard Markland officiated. Organist was Mrs. Maurice Hammons who also accompanied Mrs. Lynn Rothe and Keith Hammons who sang duets.
Pallbearers were Clifford Cooper, Ralph Lindsey, Jerry Pointer, Orlin Burrill, Ray Hanson, Alvin Horn, Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Weeping Water, with Dorr Colbert Funeral Home in charge.
