Alan D. Buchholz

Retired Longview police officer Alan Dale Buchholz, 58, of Kelso entered the presence of God Jan. 10, 2012, at St. John Medical Center.

He was born July 27, 1953, in Hillsboro, Ore., to Philip P. and Lorine G. (Knight) Buchholz. Alan graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1971 and earned three associate's degrees in Nebraska and at Portland Community College, as a "part time professional student".

Alan married Connie Hochstein in Hillsboro in 1976. They divorced in 1987.

He moved to the local area in 1991, and in 1994 he married Shannon Joy Olin in Kelso. She survives him at home.

Alan served seven years in the Air Force earning the rank of sergeant. He loved being a police officer. He retired from the Longview Police Department in 2011 after 16 years of service. Alan enjoyed his family, friends, church and playing with the "big dogs." He also enjoyed vacationing at Lake of the Woods in Southern Oregon, jet skiing, motorcycles, music, cinema and had a never-ending supply of books. Alan was happy, loving, generous and always willing to help others. He was easy-going – unless the job called for "enforcer mode".

In addition to his wife, Shannon Olin-Buchholz, Alan is survived by three children, Erin Michelle Buchholz in Tennessee, Kelsey Christine Buchholz serving in the Air Force in Ohio and Cody Scott Campbell of Gresham, Ore.; three siblings, Sheila Buchholz, Deana Buchholz and Dean Buchholz, all of Hillsboro; his mother-in-law, Neva Olin of Kelso; and numerous other in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Timothy, Jeffrey and James; his father-in-law, Scotty Olin; and K9 office Bruno whose ashes will be laid to rest with his partner.

A celebration of Alan's life is planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday at New Life Fellowship with Pastor Scott Olin and Chaplain Steve White officiating. Interment with military and police honors will take place at noon Monday at Longview Memorial Park. Friends, family and those wanting to pay their respects are welcome. Viewing are planned from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Steele Chapel.

The Alan Dale Buchholz Memorial Account has been established at Fibre Federal Credit Union.
