Lead Daily Call newspaper, Friday, September 8, 1905, Page 4 - "Died - Windolph. Joseph Windolph died this morning at 5 o'clock, at the home of his son Charles, aged 79 years the 14th of this month. The funeral will be held at St. Patrick's cathedral Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Joseph Windolph was born in the city of Gernrode, province of Saxony, Germany, September 14th, 1826. He was married to Adolphena Koch June 22, 1848. To them were born six children, five boys and one girl, the wife and children still surviving. The family came directly from Germany to the Black Hills eighteen years ago, and have since resided here. The death of the father is the first break in the family; the wife and five sons, Herman and Otto, in Germany, and Charles, Fritz and Robert, and the daughter, Mrs. M.L. Magnussen, residing in this city."

The 1900 U.S. Census finds Joseph Windolph, age 73, residing in Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota with his wife Alphina, age 70. the record notes that both were born in Germany and that he was born in September of 1826. The couple were enumerated in the household of their son and daughter-in-law, Fritz and Anna Windolph.

New York Passenger Lists for 1820 to 1957 show Joseph Windolph, age 56, along with his wife Adolphine, age 53, and son Robert, age 15, as passengers on the "Hammonia." Port of departure was Hamburg, Germany and Le Havre, France. The ship arrived at the Port of New York on August 28, 1883.
